Fashion of the 1920s

The 1920s, also known as the Roaring Twenties were a definite highlight in the illustrious timeline of fashion history. For one, it saw the rise of a new type of woman called the "flapper". A flapper was a lady who enjoyed herself and dared to embrace the modern and unconventional.

A designer and style icon of the time was Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel. Born and based in France, she started off as a hatmaker and soon expanded to clothing. She opened her first fashion boutique in 1921 and it was not long before the Chanel label also had jewellery and fragrance. She established the "little black dress", which remains popular to today. Her dresses became the epitome of the forward-thinking decade. Here are some examples of Chanel's work:

20s fashion saw a major change in the way women dressed. Corsets were abandoned and shorter haircuts became fashionable. Hemlines rose to calf length, and in later parts of the decade, dresses were as short as knee length. Waistlines became looser and lower, showing off boyish figures in women. This type of dress was known as the shift dress.

In addition to the iconic dresses we associate with the 20s, cloche hats and wrapover coats were also popular, both of which are pictured below.
